Have you ever felt paralyzed by the endless possibilities in the world?
There was a study that I read about recently. It said that the desired number of choices that some one should be offered is 5. 5 is the perfect number because if you had more than 5 options, you would be struggling. You would not be able to enjoy what you have chosen because you think that you would have liked the other options more, thereby sabotaging your gratification.
In Australia, I have exactly 5 channels to choose from if I am watching TV. 7, GO, 9, Ten and 7TWO. I would always be able to choose a channel and be contented with what I was watching. When I have cable, I have thousands of channels to choose from. I can never pick a channel and stick with it, flicking back and forth the channels, making sure I have not missed anything more exciting to watch.
Undoubtedly, choosing the right place to go after high school is like watching cable TV. There are so many choices that I am incapable of choosing a route. I do not trust myself to choose a right path because if it wasnt something that I liked, I had no one to blame.
Moreover, after choosing the right University, my entire career path feels paralyzed by the endless possibilities. When I think and contemplate about all the different routes available to me – different routes but equally numerous to you, I get paralysed. How do I decide?
Instead of seeing it as a negative, it is a fantastic problem to be faced with. My vast imagination has contributed to the realisation of these infinite routes. This is the exact opposite problem that many people are conned into having. If you feel like you have no options, it means that you are suffering from a lack of imagination. A disease that only you can cure.
Where ever you are standing, sitting or lying now, any where in the world, there are an infinite number of routes that you can take to extend outwards and into your ever bright future. At any moment, anyone of us is free to go and realise a new pattern of thought and pursue a new route.
This is freedom. This is the power of imagination. And it is paralyzing.
